Rivers in China are so many. Actually there are mainly seven rivers including the Yangtze River, the yellow river and the pearl river in addition to other branches. So, here are some of the most important rivers in China.
Rivers in China – Yangtze River
The Yangtze River is one of the most important rivers in China and considered the third longest river in the world, after the Egyptian Nile river in Africa and the Amazon river in South America.
This river is about 6397 kilometers, and for this reason, it is the biggest and longest river in Asia. It springs from Tanggula mountains in Tibbets hills and goes through nine provinces and two countries, such as Shanghai, Wuhan, Chongqing and Chengdu.
The Yangtze River and the yellow rivers are called “the mother river” in China. In addition, there are many touristic sites along the Yangtze River including:
- Fengdu Ghost City.
- The three valleys.
- The three Gorges Dam.
Rivers in China – The Yellow River
It is about 5464 kilometers. As a result, it is the second longest river in China, after the Yangtze river. In addition, it is the fifth longest river in the world.
It springs from the province of western Qinghai and it is joined with Bohai river in Shandong province. It goes through nine provinces and through Loess hill. The yellow river basin is considered the birth of China, and this is why it is called “the mother river“.
Rivers in China – The Pearl River
It is considered the third longest river in China with totally 2400 kilometers. And it is features for its branches that join the eastern river and the western river. Thus, it is considered one of the seven main rivers in China.
It springs from south China, and the reason of naming it is the pearls in the riverbed along with Guangzhou city.

The Song Hua Jiang River
It springs from Jhansi which is called (The celestial lake). The river is located on Changbai Mountain in north east China, and it has multiple branches called “The Milky Way” in the Manchu language.
It is about 1840 kilometers with many attractive sites for tourists like the Rime River.
Rivers in China – The Huai River
It springs from Taishan mountain and merges with Yangtze and Songhuajiang. It is about 1110 kilometers.
The Huaihe river with Qinling mountain form the geographic borders of the south and north China.
The Grand Canal in China
It is considered one of the manmade rivers in the world and was built in the fifth century.
It goes through six main provinces in China passing Tianjin, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang to the city of Hangzhou with 1797 kilometers. And it is linked to Qiantang River in the south.
The Heilongjiang River
It is considered an international river because it passes through China and Russia. The river is named as “Amur River” and passes through south east China and joins Okhotsk river in the west of the pacific ocean.
It is 4370 kilometers and it is the eleventh longest rivers in the world. In addition, it has many attractive sites in Heilongjiang province and other provinces.
